What is a Safe@Home Class?

Safe@Home by Safe SitterĀ® is a 90-minute program that prepares students in grades 4–6 to be safe when they are home alone. The course teaches safe habits, how to prevent unsafe situations, and how to handle emergencies such as power failures or weather incidents. Students also learn to assess and respond to injuries and illnesses using the Safe SitterĀ® First Aid Chart.

Safe@Home is intended for students in grades 4–6 who may spend short periods of time home alone. It is ideal for children who have expressed interest in assuming the responsibility of staying home alone and for parents seeking to prepare their child for this new independence. ​

The Safe@Home program covers:

The program is designed to prepare students for their first steps towards independence. ​

No, Safe@Home is an introductory course focused on home-alone safety. It does not include instruction on rescue skills, child care skills, or business skills. Students who complete Safe@Home and wish to learn more can enroll in a comprehensive Safe SitterĀ® course, such as Safe SitterĀ® Essentials, which includes CPR and babysitting training. ​

Each student is required to have a Safe@Home booklet, which costs $15.00 per person.Ā 

Completing the Safe@Home program does not automatically mean a child is ready to stay home alone. Only the child’s parents can make that decision, based on the age, maturity, skills, experience, and confidence level of their child. However, this program will help students learn about how to practice safe habits, how to handle common household emergencies, and how to address illness or injury. ​
