At Des Moines CPR, we’re committed to empowering our community with life-saving skills. In addition to our CPR certification classes, we offer Safe Sitter® programs tailored for youth and adults to build confidence and safety awareness in caregiving situations. Whether you’re a preteen learning to babysit, a child preparing to stay home alone, or a grandparent caring for grandchildren, our courses provide essential knowledge for every stage of caregiving.

Safe@Home
Home Alone Safety Classes

Covers staying safe while home alone, handling emergencies, and preventing unsafe situations. Ideal for building confidence and independence in kids. Indoor, outdoor, online, and personal safety topics will be discussed.

Geared towards individuals:

  • Students in grades 4–6
  • Kids starting to stay home alone
  • Families focused on safety basics

Safe Sitter Essentials

Covers safety, child care, first aid, and business skills in a 5½-hour, instructor-led course. Ideal for middle schoolers preparing to babysit, stay home alone, or care for siblings—offering hands-on practice with manikins and real-life scenarios. 

Geared towards individuals:

  • Students in grades 6–8
  • Preteens ready to babysit or stay home alone
  • Youth seeking practical safety and caregiving skills
  • Families wanting to build confidence and responsibility

Grandparents: Getting Started

Covers modern child care practices, behavior management, and life-saving skills like CPR and choking rescue. Ideal for grandparents seeking updated knowledge and confidence in caring for grandchildren.

  • New or soon-to-be grandparents

  • Adults returning to caregiving roles after years
  • Community members supporting family caregivers

Thank you for your interest in the SafeSitter courses. We have partnered with Urbandale School District to offer both Safe@Home and Babysitting Essentials with CPR this fall. The following dates for these classes are as follows:

Babysitting Essentials with CPR

Saturday 09/27/25 from 9:30am-4:00pm

Saturday 12/06/2025 from 9:30am-4:00pm

Safe@Home

Thursday 10/02/2025 from 5:30pm-7:00pm

Thursday 12/11/2025 from 5:30pm-7:00pm

At this time, these are the only classes we will offer for SafeSitter. If your child is not an Urbandale student, they are still able to register for these classes at no additional cost. Classes will be held at the Urbandale High School Media Center – 7111 Aurora Avenue, Urbandale, IA 50322.
